2007 Release
1975 Indy 500®
Driver: Tom Sneva #68
Order Item #4810

Item # 4810

McLaren began the Wing Era at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway® in 1971, with a then-revolutionary design of front and rear wings and side radiators that is still the accepted form of open wheel racing cars thirty years later. McLaren M16's won the Indy 500® in 1972, 1974, and 1976. Team McLaren - now McLaren International - is one of only four racing car constructors to ever win both the Indy 500® and the F1 Championship, and the only one to ever win both more than once.

McLaren History The 1971 McLaren M16 set new standards for Indy cars. Designer Gordon Coppuck penned a car for Team McLaren chief Teddy Mayer with a wedged-shaped body, side radiators, and front and rear wings. Although body shapes have since been aerodynamically refined, side radiators and wings, front and rear, remains the pattern 30 years later. Peter Revson put his Team McLaren M16 on the 1971 Indy pole, edging Mark Donohue in Roger Penske's M16. Donohue dominated the race before a transmission failure sidelined him, and Revson finished 2nd. When later M16 variants appeared, the 1971 M16's were referred to as M16A's. In 1972, Donohue won the Indianapolis 500® for Penske in a McLaren M16B. Johnny Rutherford in a Team McLaren M16C sat on the Indy pole in 1973 but finished 9th in the race. Roger McCluskey was 3rd at Indy in Lindsey Hopkins' M16A, and he went on to win the 1973 National Championship. In 1974, revised rules required narrower rear wings and lower turbo boost to limit speeds, plus smaller fuel tanks to increase safety. Rutherford won the Indy 500® in a Team McLaren M16C/D in 1974, finished 2nd in an M16E in 1975, and won again, from the pole, in an M16E in 1976. After that, the M16 series was no longer competitive, and McLaren progressed to a newer design. An M16 chassis made its last start at the Brickyard® in 1979.
